Anders Kofoed Rømer held the rank of Captain. Store Hallegård isclassified as a "proprietair" farm.

On Bornholm there were three classes of farms:

1) Proprietairgård (Propr.): a freehold estate (thus also called aFrigård), which could only be owned by a freeman (frimand) or a member ofthe nobility (adelsmand).

2) Selvejergård (Slg.): meaning a farm owned independently, free ofobligations to an estate owner - it could be occupied by its owner orleased to a peasant farmer (bonde).

3) Vornedegård (Vdg.), two types: a) the first type was part of anestate (i.e. connected to a proprietairgård), the peasants who lived onthem were tenants and were obliged to provide labor, known as the"Herlighedsright" (Glory-right), to the owner of the estate; b) the othertype was referred to as a "Fri Vornedegård", this type of farm was notconnected to an estate and was free of the labor obligation - could beowned by a freeman and leased to a peasant.

A map drawn in 1851 shows 17 estate-farms classified as Proprietair: 3in each of Åker, Ibsker and Nyker parishes; 2 each in Østermarie andKlemensker; and 1 each in Pedersker, Bodilsker, Østerlars, and Olsker. There were hundreds of farms comprising the other two classifications. The typical farm is arranged in a joined U shape, with the farmhouse, barn, pig-stall, and utility-shed all built around a cobble-stonecourtyard.

Mads Andersen

Mads Andersen took over management of Krogegård in 1829 from his father, who died two years later. Mads Andersen died at 47 years old in 1838,his widow Kirstine Svendsdatter was granted permission to stay atKrogegård (Bl. Ø. H. Skiftep. 1835-45 Fol. 119-2); the value of theestate was estimated at 4,000 Rigsdalers. All three children were underage, therefore the widows brother, Søren Low from Melstedgård, came tolive at the farm.

Kirstine Svendsdatter lost her husband of 16 years when she was 40 yearsold. As she refused to re-marry, her unmarried brother Søren Low came tohelp her farm Krogegård and raise her three young children. She died ofbreast cancer at the age of 57. She is the last of my direct ancestorsto own Krogegård, although it would stay in the family ownership forseveral more generations.

Vilhelm Svendsen in "Østerlarsker Slægter" provides us with the followinginformation about, and written by her brother Søren Low. He was one ofthe few writers in our family-clan. Unfortunately, nearly all of hiswritings seem to have been lost. He was the manager of Krogegård forsome years after the death of his brother-in-law Mads Andersen, workingto help his sister Kirstine Svendsdatter. On this period in his lifeSøren wrote the following observations:

For the longest time it has been my intention to let those of my familyand friends who might be interested, know how much happiness andcontentment I derived from the years spent on that first selfowner-farm,Krogegård; but on account of my farm-chores I did not seem to find timeto put pen to paper until today. When suddenly the recollection of myexperiences there flooded my mind and urged me to leave my chores inorder to write down this epistle, which also serves to preserve thehappenings in my own memory.

In the year of 1838 on December 5th it pleased our almighty, loving Godby death to release my dearly-beloved brother-in-law from the heavy cloakof earthly dust. Only a short span of time was allotted this brave man,the loss of whom is felt deeply by his sorrowing family, but also by thecountless poor and needy people who could always count on his help.

But we must not despair about the decisions from God in Heaven -everything he sends us to bear will turn out to be a true blessing. Mydear sister Kirstine Svendsdatter, married to the deceased, became sosaddened by this unexpected loss, which every compassionate person wouldunderstand, that she decided never to re-marry.

Because of the unexpected death of my brother-in-law I left my belovedfamily-farm, the second selfowner-farm in this county, at the request ofmy sister; moving into the house belonging to her and my deceasedbrother-in-law. Where I, as earlier mentioned, spent some of thehappiest years of my life. This change of abode was made so I would beable to better console the sorrowing family, which I could do much betterthan a stranger. Much of my time was devoted to securing a good futurefor my nieces and nephews. With glory to God, I can now confess that thehope I nurtured about their success in life did not wither and die;because the seeds sown by me bore fruits far beyond my imagining.

During the first two years living with the family, my tender heart oftenached seeing the myriads of bitter tears flowing from their eyes. Duringthese moments of sorrow I tried to make my dear relatives aware thatmortals like us ought not to doubt the wise guidance of our Creator, whoalways looks out for our timely, as well as our eternal, well-being.However, this well-intentioned consolation could not always stop theirtears and lament; thus I lived those two years trying to ease the sorrowof this dear family, that forever had lost the tender care of theirfather to the cold grave. Slowly though, time seemed to heal the deepwounds inflicted by the cruel reaper unto the hearts of my dearrelatives. God, who decides the fate of very human-being, sent a healingbalsam to speed up their recovery of joy in living together -- withhopeful hearts for the future.

Therefore, I continued to live with my dear family for some time, trulythe happiest time of my life. Often I look back with tears of joy uponthose days, when I -- and I believe rather successfully -- strived to dothe task of my deceased brother-in-law. I wished deeply to stay withthat dear family, but circumstances, which I will not mention here, forced me to go elsewhere: back to my place of work among my dearsiblings, where I am still happily toiling.

Hans Madsen

After the death of the father, Mads Andersen, in 1787 the right toKrogegård, 1 Slg. Østerlars, went to the youngest son: Hans Madsen. Allsix surviving siblings agreed that Hans was to take over the farm, whichwas valued at 162 Sliverdalers and 2 Marks, as well as all other assetsand liabilities. Also, he was to pay 200 Sliverdalers to his deceasedsister's children, and another 200 Silverdalers to his unmarried sisterGundel. That sum of 400 Sldr. was not to be payed out, but left in theestate at Krogegård (together with Gundel's 399 Sldr. inheritance fromher mother) until it was needed at some future date.

In 1793 Hans Madsen had a new residence built at Krogegård - aninscription on a beam bears his and his wife's initials, it says: "H.M.S.- A.M.H.D. Anno 1793 Majus 13." (Translation: the new house of "HanMads' Son and Anne Marie Hans' Daughter" was completed on May 13, 1793)

From the marriage with Anne Marie Hansdatter there was only one child, son Mads Andersen; he would take over Krogegård after his father.
