Svend Thorsen obtained the legal rights to Melstedgård when he was only18 years old, but with the clause that his parents were to live andmanage the farm as long as they were able.Only two years later, on December 8, 1779, Svend and his fiancee KirstinePedersdatter received the rights to a farm in Strandby, Østerlars parish, from Kirstine's father Peder Michelsen. The purchase price was 3,700Silverdalers, of which Peder's two sons Peder Low and Hans Pedersen wereto respectively receive 3,000 and 700 Sldr. A year later, in 1780, SvendThorsen married Kirstine and then sold the Strandby farm to hisbrother-in-law. The purchase price was now 3,300 Silverdalers, of whichSvend still owed Peder Low 3,000 Silverdalers and to Hans Pedersen heowed 300 Silverdalers. A contract was made whereby Svend got the rightto live on and manage the Strandby farm for the next six years, assumingthe payment of all taxes. Also it was stipulated that he must allow hisparents-in-law to stay at the farm. In 1787 Svend Thorsen moved back toMelstedgård to take over its management.

Thenet worth of the farm was 6,600 Rigsdalers, of which the widow got halfand their five sons each got 471 Rigsdalers, 2 Marks and 9-1/2 Skillings, and the four daughters each got 235 Rigsdalers, 4 Marks and 4 Skillings.Their mother Kirstine, however, gave each of her daughters enough toequal their brothers inheritance. However, at the same time shepassed the right of ownership on to her oldest son Thor Pedersen - forthe above mentioned sum of 4,567 Rdl. No interest was to be added to thesum, which was not due to be paid out to his siblings until after thedeath of their mother:
