RASMUS KØLLER

1 _FA1
2 PLAC Nobleman (Adelsmand)
1 MISC Store Ølegård, 58' Slg Østermarie, Bornholm

Rasmus Køller/Köller owned Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. in Ibsker from circa1562-74; and Store Ølegård, 58 Slg. Østermarie from 1562. Rasmus Køller's wife Boritta inherited 35 Slg. Klemensker (then known as Krakkegård, later called Kjøllergård).

Kure's farm-owner list states that Claus Kiøller (circa 1595-1666)inherited Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. in Ibsker parish, from the previous ownerHans Køller (died 1609), who had inherited it from his father RasmusKøller - who was possibly the son of a nobleman named Hans von Køllerfrom Pomerania. Besides the 13 Slg. in Ibsker, Hans Køller alsoinherited the 35 Slg. in Klemensker; which he later passed on to his sonLaurids Kiøller (died circa 1667). It seems to me that if Rasmus Köllerand Boritta had no children, then her family-farm in Klemensker wouldprobably have been inherited by her relatives, not those of her husbandRasmus Köller. This would seem to point to Hans Køller being the son ofRasmus and Boritta, not Claus Köller. - Norman Madsen, February 6, 2003.

From the "Dansk adelsvåbner, en heraldisk nøgle", page 299, by Sven Tito Achen, Politikens Forlag, 1973, København:

From the "Bornholmske Samlinger", 2nd edition, volume 7, page 75-76:

The above translated to english:
(Rasmus Køller) lived at Kjøllergård in Ibsker parish, but after Borittainherited her grandparents's farm Krakkegård in Klemensker parish theymoved there. Krakkegård had been made tax free by the archbiphopric inLund, however this was the time of the Lübeck occupation and SvederKetting (Lübeck's representative) demanded payment of land taxes: a halfbarrel of butter a year. "Borette" gave her opinion of this and as aresult was summoned before the North District council, where on August 1,1570 she was sentenced to a whipping, which was executed. Despite thedreadful and dishonourable punishishment she was not discouraged. Shejourneyed to København and got the case appealed to the "Herredagen",that era's highest court. There her opinion was agreed with, and thejudgement made on June 12, 1572 awarded her a generous compensation, andtax free status was re-confirmed by the king in 1574.

HANS von KÖLLER

1 _FA1
2 PLAC Nobleman (Adelsmand)

Kure's farm-owner list states that Claus Kiøller (circa 1595-1666)inherited Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. in Ibsker parish, from the previous ownerHans Køller (-1571-1609), who had inherited it from his father RasmusKøller (-1562-1574-) - who was possibly the son of a nobleman, andKnight, named Hans von Køller (of Kjøllergård, 13' Ibsker?) fromPomerania who came to Bornholm in the early 1500s; though there seems tobe no evidence forthcoming to support the existence of a Hans von Køller, let alone a father-son connection. (It seems possible that because HansKøller was considered to be the son of Rasmus Køller, therefore RasmusKøller must have followed the patronymic naming system and named his sonafter his father: Hans, who must have been a member of Pomeranian noblefamily von Köller!)

According to Edvard Skovgaard, in "1000 Aner til en Skovgårdsslægt", theabove mentioned Claus Köller (whom I contend died circa 1550), is the sonof an Arend Köller (-1534-1568-), the Squire (Godsejer) of a propertycalled "Bower" (most likey Bauer in Bauer parish, Greifswald county) inPomerania; and that Arend is the son of Claus Köller (-1470-1494-) ofHohensee (in Hohendorf parish, Greifswald county). Edvard Skovgaardspeculates that Arend von Köller is the father of both Claus Köller andRasmus Köller (-1562-1574-) of Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. Ibsker. Skovgaardfurther states that Rasmus Köller died childless; contending that theheir to Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. Ibsker: Hans Køller (-1571-1609), is theson of Claus Köller. Edvard Skovgaard differs from Kure in assertingthat Claus Kiøller (circa 1595-1666) is the son of Christen ClausenKøller and Margrethe Mogensdatter Uf.

Ernst Matthias von Köller, in "Urkundenbuch des Pommerschen Geschlechtsv. Köller, 1280-1900", mentions an Arnd von Köller (-1512-1523-) of Bowerand Jasedow; he further speculates that a Claus von Köller (-1557-1568-)of Bower might be the son of Arnd von Köller. Claus von Köller is namedas the father of an Arnd von Köller (-1608-1614-) of Bower, alsolease-holder of Rackett.

It is my own contention that Skovgaard's Arend Köller (-1534-1568-) isnot the father of Claus Köller (died circa 1550) and Rasmus Köller, butrather that he might be the brother of Claus Köller; that the two(brothers) are possibly the sons of the elder Arnd von Köller(-1512-1523-), of Bower and Jasedow, mentioned in the book by ErnstMatthias von Köller. Possibly Rasmus Køller/Köller is the son of (thehypothetical?) Hans von Køller/Köller; who might possibly be the brotherof the elder Arnd von Köller. Note, however, that Edvard Skovgaardprovides no definitive evidence proving his assertion that Claus Kölleris the son of Arend Köller of Bower; so these connections can only beconsidered as speculative.

Rasmus Køller's wife, Boritta, was the heir to her grandfather's farm,Krakkegård (later renamed Kjøllergård), 35 Slg. Klemensker parish.Besides the 13 Slg. in Ibsker, Hans Køller also inherited the 35 Slg.in Klemensker; which he later passed on to his son Laurids Kiøller (diedcirca 1667). It seems to me that if Rasmus Køller and Boritta had nochildren then her family-farm in Klemensker would probably have beeninherited by her relatives, not those of her husband Rasmus Köller. Thiswould seem to point to Hans Køller being the son of Rasmus and Boritta, not Claus Köller.

It is from Claus Kiøller that descend all genuine Køller/Kiøller/Kjøllersof Bornholm. Many others have borrowed the name after having someconnection to one of the "Kjøllergårdene" (Kjøller farms). His son Hansinherited Kjøllergård, 13 Slg. Ibsker; the other three sons' farms wereall named "Kjøllergård" as well: Jeppe, the 2 Slg. in Rø parish; Rasmus, the 35 Slg. in Bodilsker parish; Mogens, the 39 Slg. in Østermarieparish. Claus Kiøller was a farm-owner (gårdejer) - he ownedKjøllergård, 13 Slg. Ibsker. His widow Boel later moved to Sjælegård,22 Slg. Østermarie. Claus Kiøller held the position of Reeve(Sandemand) for the Eastern District (Østre Herred).

Claus Kiøller was evidently married at least twice. According to MargitTobberup (pub. 1980) his first wife was named Margrethe SimonsdatterMunch; his second marriage was to Boel Svendsdatter. There doesn'tappear to be any solid evidence that Claus' first wife as a "MargretheSimonsdatter Munch". Though it is notable that all three of Claus'children (Terchild, Mogens, and Margrethe) from his first marriage allnamed daughters Margrethe. The September 4, 1710 probate of ChristenLaursen's wife Cathrine, of Svaneke, which names her as "Trine SimonKiøllers daatter". This tells us that there was a Simon Kjøller(possibly of Svaneke?) - but there is no evidence that he is the son ofClaus Kiøller and his first wife.

Terchild (Clausen) Kjøller and his wife Boel Henningsdatter had eightchildren, 6 sons and 2 daughters. An analysis of their names leads tocircumstantial evidence supporting the theory that Terchild's mother wasa "Simonsdatter." Boel Henningsdatter was the daughter of HenningAlbertsen (c.1616-1693), her mother's name is not known, however it isnotable that in his 2nd marriage Henning Albertsen named a daughterBirgitte (born circa 1678). Terchild and Boel's 1st child was namedClaus, after Terchild's father. Their 2nd child was named Henning, afterBoel's father. The 3rd child was named Hans, after Terchild's father'sfather. The 4th child was named Margrethe, after Terchild's mother? The5th child was named Albert, after Boel's father's father. The 6th childwas named Simon, after Terchild's mother's father (Simon Munch?)? The7th child was named Peder, after Boel's mother's father? The 8th childwas named Birgitte, after Boel's mother?

The evidence that Margrethe, wife of Jochum Thiesen of Svaneke, is thedaughter of Claus Kiøller can be found in the probate for DidrichMogensen which states:

(In the original Danish)
"Sal. Didrich Mounsen, som havde tilhold hos Margrethe sal. JochumThiesens her udi Svaneke, med hvis broderdatter Birgitte TorkildKjøllersdatter han har haft trolovelse, som nu er død udi Aakier Sogn hossin søster og søstermand Peder Rasmussen i Pæregaard."

(Translated to English)
"The deceased Didrich Mounsen, who had order with Jochum Thiesen's widowMargrethe of Svaneke, with whose brother's daughter Birgitte TorkildKjøllersdatter he had been betrothed, and who is now in Åker parish withher sister and sister's husband Peder Rasmussen of Pæregård."

The ancestry of Claus Kiøller is disputed. According to Kure'sfarm-owner list he is the son of Hans Køller, the previous owner ofKjøllergård, 13 Slg. Ibsker. According to Edvard Fabricius SonneSkovgaard, in "1000 Aner til en Skovgårdsslægt" (pub. 1989), Claus is theson of Christen Clausen Køller and Margrethe Mogensdatter Uf.

The probate for Boel Svendsdatter (December 18 & 19, 1693) provides uswith the following clue on the family relations of Claus Kiøller: "denyngste daatter Barta Hansdaatter, for hende er Hans Køller i ClemmeskerSogn verge". Those who acted as guardians during probates were generallyclose relatives. The "Hans Køller" mentioned is Hans Larsen Kjøller(died 1704) of Kjøllergård, 35 Slg. Klemensker, the son of LauritsKiøller - the previous owner of 35 Slg. Klemensker. Laurids Kiøller isthe son of Hans Køller (died 1609) of 13 Slg. Ibsker and of 35 Slg.Klemensker. This seems to me to support the hypothesis that ClausKiøller is the son of Hans Køller, rather than the son of ChristenClausen Køller and Margrethe Mogensdatter Uf of Skovsholm.
