Ebbe (Hvide) Skjalmsen was married first to Gyda, and second to Regnild.Ebbe died in 1151. Together with his brothers, he founded the SorøMonastery. It is probable that he is the "Ebbo de Bastetorp" mentionedin a gift letter (gavebrev) from 1130 concerning the Bastrup Tower byBastrup Lake.
He also had Bjernede Church built, the only round church on Sjælland.Across the romanesque style entrance in latin is written: Ebbe Skjalmsenand his wife Ragnhild built here a church, which later their son Sunebuilt of stone to honour God, Saint Maria and Saint Laurentius. Thistells us that a wooden church, built in the beginning of the 1100s, wassoon replaced by the round stone church that exists to this day.(Source: Dansk Adelsårbog, 1893, page 152.)
